In 1985 Honda scooters had automatic chokes, so that wouldn’t cause the spark plug to foul. But it would prevent a cold engine from starting if it was bad. And the timing is not adjustable, so you can rule that out.
I can’t give a complete answer because I don’t know what model you have. Honda made 2&4 stroke scooters in 1985.
A small 2 stroke over 20 yrs old will probably need the top end repaired, if it’s never been done (piston, rings, cyl).
A worn out top end will foul the spark plug causing it to back fire. Try changing the spark plug.
When asking technical questions, give year, make, engine size & model #.
sounds like a carberator problem. If it was sitting up for a long time, usually gas turns bad and gums up the carb. you’ll need to access the carb and shoot some carb cleaner into it. Ideally, you’d take it apart and completely soak it.
its a Honda but really the timing is off
it sounds like you didn’t turn the choke off and fouled the plug
It’s a honda!!!
take out the spark plug and file it down.
Check the gas. Make sure you have some in the tank. Now pull the fuel line off the carb and make sure you have a good flow. If not, clean petcock.
Remove float bowl. Gas should pour out. If not, clean floats and jets.
Change oil, plug and get a new air filter ASAP
Purchase a manual.
If all else fails, take to dealership. Spending $75 to $100 bucks is well worth it in the long run.
back fire, only timing or bad fuel
No one has asked the obvious question: did you run out of gas? If it has been sitting for awhile before you bought it, drain the gas tank and put in fresh gas. Install a new spark plug. Why people mess with plugs when you can buy a new one for four dollars I’ll never know.
definitly sounds like timing.
